A Thanksgiving Prayer

Lord God of all the Living Universe, God of Whom there is no image,

--Thank you for the Constitution of these United States, for once we knew we should be free.

--Thank you for the men and women of the Armed Forces who offer their lives in defense of America--no greater sacrifice is found.

--Thank you for our children, our future. May we not disappoint them--or you.

--Thank you for good friends and sworn enemies. Both teach us more about love and hate, trust and dishonesty, than we ever learn in church or school.

--Thank you for the athiests who daily prove your existence, lest their clamoring voices be raised against nothing but thin air.

--Thank you for what's right in our world, and what's wrong, that we may better know the difference, that we may all find the purpose--large or small--to our lives.

--Thank you.

Freedom of Speech--Thy Name is Not Obama

Normally, we refrain from entering political frays, we being the staff and editor of Jigsaw Press. After all, we believe, as our Forefathers who crafted the US Constitution, that Freedom of Speech is our first and most important right as US citizens. Perhaps not only a right, but an important safeguard against intrusive and increasingly tyrannical government.

Yet, when a sitting President attempts to shut down one news organization--FOX News--because they refuse to march lockstep ten feet behind him, something has gone very wrong in the administration of the government of this country.

We will not argue merits of free speech here as they are, or should be, self evident. But we will continue to vigorously defend our, and others', right to say, to write and publish anything we consider important, whether that be the latest work of a conservative right-wing novelist or the books of a former investigative journalist. And heaven help anyone who dares to try to stop us.

Kudos are due to the mainstream media, specifically the bureau chiefs who refused to kowtow to the administration's demands to exclude FOX News reporter Major Garret from an interview with a Treasury official.

One has to wonder with US soldiers dying in Afghanistan, why the Obama administration dithers yet on making a decision as to the mission of that war, but the President has time to read, according to various sources, 4 or 5 newspapers a day, catch snippets of news throughout the day on televisions in the Oval office, plus golf on Sunday, plus fund-raisers for organizations loyal to his agenda--an agenda which appears increasingly alarming to those of us in business.

How is it that this President thinks an attack on FOX News trumps addressing the issues of 10% unemployment or even healthcare reform, which by the way we are solidly against in all its present forms?

From our viewpoint, Obama appears destined to be called our first welfare president in that he appears to do little or no work, but expects to be paid all the same.

There is a difference between campaigning and governing. We see far too much of the former and not nearly enough of the latter.

Obama said once we would know him by the company he keeps. If that wasn't just another hollow remark amongst the thousands of half-truths and outright lies crafted to control the press, and ultimately the People of these United States, then we, the staff and editor at Jigsaw Press, are right to be very concerned about this president's ulterior motives regarding the freedoms guaranteed us by the Constitution--concerned enough to finally break our political fast and stand firmly with the opposition, including our Forefathers and FOX News, against those who trample their oaths to the Constitution on a daily basis and cheapen so as to destroy the offices to which they were elected.

Freedom of Speech is every US citizen's inalienable right. And if you, President Obama, do not like what is being said about you, or the stories cropping up in the news about the organizations, unions, and, above all, the people you surround yourself with, we suggest you put down the newspapers, shut off the televisions, cancel the golfing and the fundraisers, and actually do some work for a change. If you cannot decide anything without first sticking your wet finger into the political winds, you should consider stepping down from the Presidency as you are, by all effects and appearances, in way over your head.

One Author's Thrill

Brady's Run author Joseph Collum experienced quite a thrill the other day. Seems he was in a local bookstore--WELL READ, Del Ray Beach, Florida--that stocks his debut novel when an older couple came into the store asking for any other books by Joseph Collum. A friend had purchased a copy of Brady's Run during the booksigning at the store in May and had given them the copy to read. Both husband and wife were so taken by the Max Brady mystery, they wanted anything else from Joseph Collum. Once you read Brady's Run, you'll understand why.

Upon being informed by WELL READ's owner, Donna, that Joseph Collum was actually in the store, the couple couldn't say enough nice things about the book and its author. They're looking forward to the second book in the Max Brady series, tentatively entitled Et Tu, Brady? as well as Collum's nonfiction account of a story he and his team of investigators broke during his television reporting days at WWOR. The Black Dragon: How and Where Racial Profiling Began is due to be released by Jigsaw Press toward the end of this year.

"It's so energizing to think that another human being who you don't know and doesn't know you would spend an entire day reading your book and then rave about it," Collum said in an email relating the recent incident. "Inspiring. Almost compares to my fantasy of walking through an airport someday and seeing somebody reading my book! Funny, those little things in life that push us onward."

Honoring the Sacrifice

We, the staff of Jigsaw Press, choose this 4th of July to honor the sacrifice of American Patriots and Soldiers--past, present and future--for the part they've played, and have yet to play, over more than two centuries of ensuring our freedoms.

Yes, we know there is a Memorial Day designated by Congress for expressly that purpose, but without the Declaration of Independence drafted in 1776 by free men willing to give their all, we wouldn't have a Congress that dallied until 1941 to make the birth of America a national holiday.

Without so many Patriots willing to water the Tree of Liberty with their blood, an overwhelming majority of BBQ's would remain cold today, the fireworks unsold and unlit, and this day would be no different than any other day of the year.

Freedom is never free. Nor does Freedom, once established, remain unassailed without the many so willing to vigorously defend it--with their lives, if necessary.

In honoring the great sacrifices made throughout history by countless American Patriots and Soldiers for the sorry lot of us, the least we can do on this 4th of July is take a single moment to give our solemn and heartfelt thanks to those daring Americans who first rose to the occasion in 1776 to boldly oppose a bloody tyrant 3000 miles away, thus setting the high precedent and shining example for the American Patriots and Soldiers currently defending our nation and its freedoms from the growing horde of both foreign and domestic enemies.

American Patriots and Soldiers--we raise our cups of Tea in support of you. May God bless you in all your endeavors on Freedom's behalf.

Blazing Month for Joseph Collum

Brady's Run author Joseph Collum blazed through a series of public and private booksignings in the month of May. Sales of the first book in the Max Brady Mystery series were, and continue to be, brisk. If you haven't yet taken the time to sample Brady's Run, check out the first fifty pages at Jigsaw Press.

Between booksignings, Joseph is presently working on the second book of the series. More on Joseph Collum's appearances in future posts.

Jigsaw Press has been given the distinct honor of publishing Mr. Collum's The Black Dragon: a history of racial profiling. How did the term racial profiling enter the American lexicon? What were its roots? The Black Dragon answers these questions, and much, much more.

One thing about The Black Dragon we didn't realize until we'd finished the book. While the history of racial profiling and the ups and downs of those who sought to bring it to the nation's attention is detailed in a very entertaining and readable manner, the ending...well, let's just say that no matter what your political persuasions, we'll wager you're going to be a tad bit angry. You might just realize like we did what this book is really showing you: the corruption of our political system and both parties, a corruption that's only gotten worse since the time Mr. Collum and his intrepid I-Team at WWOR-TV first uncovered the practice of racial profiling in a series of televised reports.

For anyone with a sense of justice and fair play, anyone who believes in moral and ethical behavior, or truth, or the individual rights guaranteed under the Constitution of these United States, The Black Dragon can only upset and anger you in the end, whether you're liberal, conservative or somewhere in between. Look for The Black Dragon in November.
